How you store industrial chemicals matters as much as how you use them. Poor storage practices are a leading cause of degraded product quality, spills and compliance issues.
Segregate by Chemical Class
Acids, alkalis, oxidisers and flammable solvents should never share the same storage zone. Cross-contamination or accidental mixing during a spill can trigger hazardous reactions.
Control Temperature and Light
Many chemicals — Sodium Hypochlorite in particular — degrade faster when exposed to heat and sunlight. A cool, shaded, well-ventilated storage area preserves product strength for longer.
Use the Right Containers
Corrosive chemicals require containers built for that chemistry — HDPE for chlorine-based products, acid-resistant drums for strong acids. Using the wrong container material shortens shelf life and increases leak risk.
Label Everything Clearly
Every container should be clearly labelled with the chemical name, concentration and hazard class. This is critical not just for daily operations but for emergency response if an incident occurs.
Plan for Secondary Containment
Spill trays, bunded storage areas and acid-resistant flooring limit the spread of any leak, protecting both your facility and the environment.
Rotate Stock
Follow a first-in, first-out approach so older stock is used before newer deliveries — particularly important for chemicals that lose strength over time.
